learning design

Our Pumas work on tough, real-world Quests and challenges. Through projects, they integrate different disciplines and assess their impact on their environment.

The work in the studio is led by the Pumas with the support of guides. Pumas take responsibility for their academic goals. They learn to calculate, write and think more deeply. We use multiple platforms, on and off-line to meet the Pumas' needs in math, reading and writing (in English and Spanish). There is no maximum limit to what they can learn in a week, but there is a minimum requirement.

They develop a positive identity, surrounded by friends that support each other. By exploring their own passions and talents, and practicing in real-world jobs, they find the purpose that brings them the most joy, helps others and changes the world.

Tracking progress

Pumas share what they have accomplished on a day-to-day basis, self-evaluate weekly, and write a blog chronicling their experiences, both academic and personal. They present these to the studio each week and are accessible to the entire Acton community to read and comment on, around the world, thus creating a sense of public accountability and holding them accountable not only to themselves, but to the commitments they made to the community.
